- How much do you pay?
We pay $18/hour with the potential for program-by-program bonuses. Payments arrive twice monthly via direct deposit. BookNook tutors are independent contractors. See our Schedule & Pay page for more details.
- How many hours can I expect to work per week?
Tutoring with BookNook is an excellent way to supplement your income while helping students learn and love to read. On average tutors work between 1.5 and 10 hours a week, no minimum hours required. Our tutoring opportunities are 8–16 weeks long, and there may be gaps between jobs. BookNook is growing and aims to offer tutors up to 20 hours per week at scale (we’ll get there!). We recommend all interested candidates apply, gain experience tutoring with our platform, and join our online community to access tutoring resources and meet peers. Once you’re hired, your ability to contract with us will not expire.
- What’s your application process?
Our hiring process is designed to get you an answer quickly:
Step 1: Fill out a short online application (about 10 minutes). We’ll take no more than 3 business days to review it.
Step 2: Participate in a one-way interview, in which you’ll answer some questions on video and record a short teaching sample. We’ll take no more than 5 business days to review your recordings, then send you an email with our hiring decision.
- What’s your onboarding process to start tutoring?
Once you’re hired, you’ll sign a contract and complete BookNook’s certification process (about 2.5 hours that we pay at $18/hour). Our district partners require tutors to meet requirements similar to classroom teachers, so you’ll also complete at least one background check to start tutoring and additional checks for any other states you want to tutor in. We have a dedicated team to support you through the background check process, and we reimburse associated fees. Find out how we support tutors through onboarding in our full FAQs.
- What do tutoring sessions look like and how do I schedule them?
Each tutoring session is 30 minutes long. When you sign up for a tutoring opportunity, you’re committing to tutor for one 30-minute session 2–4 days per week for 8–16 weeks with the same group of 1–4 students. Students are in K–8th grades and grouped by reading level. We’ll post all available tutoring opportunities to our tutor portal. You can log in and choose the opportunities that fit the days, times, and grade levels that work best for you. Find more details on our Schedule & Pay page.
- Is there really no lesson planning?
None! With each new session, our tutoring platform picks up where students need to start and levels up as they advance. It also gives you real-time feedback on how each of your students is doing. All you have to do is what you do best: teach. Check out our Platform page for more.
